When it comes to dental, it can get a little confusing. One of the biggest confusing amongst clients is the actual difference between crowns and veneers as they can look very similiar from the outside. So we’ve decided to let you know exactly what the difference is, and why your dentist may prefer you have one over the other.

What is a VENEER?

Veneers are typically known as Porcelain Veneers and are thin shells of medical-grade ceramic that are attached to the front surfaces of teeth for an immediate smile transformation. Individually crafted for each patient, these cosmetic enhancements are made from advanced material that closely resembles the appearance of natural dentalenamel.

What is a CROWN?

A crown can be made up of different materials. A full porcelain crown, jacket crown or metal free crown can be made of zirconium or aluminium-oxide and seems to be the most modern fixed dental restoration work in aesthetic dentistry. Crowns are an ideal way to rebuild teeth which have been broken, or which have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. Crowns wrap around the entire tooth, as apposed to Veneers, which are fixed to the visible surface (one side only).

Why your dentist may suggest one over the other?

There are many reasons as to why your dentist would suggest you have a crown over a veneer or vice versa. And their treatment plan should be backed by an X-Ray. Your dentist may suggest a crown for you as your teeth may not be as strong to hold a veneer, or you may have larger gaps in your teeth. The reasons vary and all come down to the individual. Make sure you understand what your dentist is suggesting for you and why they are making that decision.
